Te Oranga ki Ōtākou (TOKO)

MEDICINE

Te Oranga Ki Ōtākou is the Māori Medical Students Association at the University of Otago. A strong focus is on supporting the ELM2 Māori students entering into the medical degree, as well as those tauira that come to Dunedin in the later years of their degree. Te Oranga Ki Ōtākou provide students with further opportunities to become involved in the community and have a strong emphasis on Māori principles.

Executive Positions


Tumuaki


Details: The Tumuaki also known as the President is the person who acts as a representative for Medical students across various sectors such as the University and community. They also manage the TOKO executive and provide support to all positions as well as maintain communication and relationships with Te Rōpū Māori.


Kaituhi


Details: The Kaituhi also known as the Secretary is the person who manages any admin aspects for the TOKO executive and oversee the general running of TOKO. Kaituhi also takes minutes for all TOKO executive, AGM and SGM hui.


Kaitakawaenga


Details: The Kaitakawaenga also known as Liaison Officer is responsible for connecting TOKO students to wider student groups including Te Rōpū Māori. Main priority is also given to increasing student engagement and supporting all roles of the TOKO executive.


Āpiha Oranga


Details: The Āpiha Oranga also known as Well-Being Officer is concerned with contributing to uplifting tauira Māori within the medical school. This role also manages the tuakana-teina programme, Whakatipuranga.


Tumuaki Tuarua


Details: The Tumuaki Tuarua acts as a supporting role to all positions on the TOKO executive. When necessary and in the absence of the Tumuaki they becoming acting Tumuaki.


Kaitiaki Pūtea


Details: The Kaitiaki Pūtea also known as the Treasurer is responsible for handling any financial aspects for TOKO and are required to produce a financial report at every TOKO executive hui.


Te Ao Māori Officer


Details: The Te Ao Māori Officer is an essential role that is concerned with ensuring that the desires of Māori tauira within the medical school are considered as well as respected. Where needed the Te Ao Māori Officer also acts as a bridge between TOKO and Otago University Medical Students Association


ALM Representative


Details: The ALM Rep also known as ALM holds the responsibility of keeping the older TOKO members in the loop and involved with all that TOKO has going on. This role is also concerned with keeping communications with other medical tauira based in the Wellington and Christchurch campuses as well as Dunedin.
